After the Spanish-American War in 1898, Philippines were ceded to United States as part of their settlement between Spain and US. US government administered the affairs in the Philippines from 1903 to 1935 after the Spaniard colonization. The commonwealth formed after 1936 and the former shield design at the back of the coin changed but the front design stayed the same.
